A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. There are many reasons for a tooth extraction:
- Too much damage to the tooth to be repaired
- To allow more room for braces
- Sometimes baby teeth don’t fall out on their own
- If wisdom teeth are causing pain or impacted
If you are experiencing any of these issues, a tooth extraction may your best option. There are two types of extractions, simple and surgical.
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that can be seen in the mouth. Dr. Cannon first injects a local anesthetic to numb the area, loosens and then removes the tooth.
A surgical extraction is a more complex procedure and is used if a tooth may have broken off at the gum line or has not come into the mouth yet. After a local anesthetic a small incision is made in your gum, and the tooth is removed.
